Tips for a better Medicare Enrollment Experience

There are two ways to get Medicare coverage

You have the option to choose Original Medicare, which consists of Part A for hospital coverage and Part B for medical coverage. Original Medicare is provided by the federal government, and benefits and coverage are consistent nationwide.

Alternatively, you can opt for a Medicare Advantage plan (Part C). These plans amalgamate Part A and Part B coverage and often include prescription drug coverage (Part D) along with extra benefits. Medicare Advantage plans are offered by private insurance companies.

You will pay a share of your costs.

Neither Original Medicare nor a Medicare Advantage plan covers all expenses. You are accountable for monthly premiums as well as out-of-pocket costs, including deductibles, copays, and coinsurance.

Protection from high out-of-pocket costs is available.

Medicare Advantage plans establish an annual out-of-pocket maximum, capping your costs for covered medical services and providing financial protection. This maximum includes deductibles, copays, and coinsurance for Part A and B services covered by the plan. Original Medicare, however, lacks such a cap.

Medicare supplement insurance plans assist in covering out-of-pocket costs not paid by Original Medicare, such as deductibles and coinsurance. These plans are available from private insurance companies.

It’s important to note that you cannot use a Medicare supplement insurance plan if you are enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan. The two plans do not work together and cannot be used simultaneously.

There are two ways to get drug coverage.

With Original Medicare, you have the option to add a standalone prescription drug plan (Part D) for drug coverage. Alternatively, you can choose a Medicare Advantage plan that includes prescription drug coverage. These plans are provided by private insurance companies.

You may have many options.

Medicare Advantage plans and prescription drug plans differ in coverage and cost, with insurance companies providing multiple plan options in your area.

In contrast, Medicare supplement insurance plans are standardized nationwide, except in Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Massachusetts, ensuring consistency in coverage regardless of the state.

Timing matters when you first enroll.

Your Initial Enrollment Period (IEP) is the first opportunity to enroll in Medicare and select your coverage. This period spans 7 months, including your birthday month or the 25th month of receiving disability benefits, along with the 3 months before and 3 months after. If your birthday falls on the 1st, the period starts and ends a month earlier.

If you are already receiving Social Security or Railroad Retirement Board benefits when you become eligible, you are automatically enrolled in Part A and Part B. Otherwise, you need to enroll yourself.

It’s important to note that Medicare Part A, Part B, and Part D may impose penalties if you sign up after your IEP ends, unless you qualify for a Special Enrollment Period.

It’s wise to review your choices every year.

Medicare Annual Enrollment occurs annually from October 15 to December 7. During this period, you have the opportunity to change your coverage choices.

You can switch from one Medicare Advantage plan or prescription drug plan to another, or transition between Original Medicare and a Medicare Advantage plan, or vice versa. Any changes made during this period take effect on January 1.

You may enroll or make changes at other times.

Medicare offers Special Enrollment Periods for specific life events, such as relocating your primary residence or leaving an employer health plan. A comprehensive list of qualifying events can be found at Medicare.gov.

Additionally, there is a Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period from January 1 to March 31. During this period, you have the option to switch to a different Medicare Advantage plan or revert to Original Medicare by dropping your plan.
